| The Girl in the Green Sweater: An Evening with Krystyna Chiger & Daniel Paisner |
Wednesday, April 29, 2009 -- 7 PM
Free Admission
|
Co-authors and Port Washington residents Krystyna Chiger and Daniel Paisner discuss her memoir, detailing Chiger's early years, largely spent hiding from Nazi and Ukrainian persecution.
The girl int he green sweater lived with her family and a few others in the sewers beneath the streets of the city of Lvov, Poland, for 14 months. They were surrounded with thousands of rats, raw sewage, mold, darkness and cold. The dangerous Peltew River was always closing in on them and threatening to flood. The river carried away the raw sewage flowing through the open canals surrounding the girl's hiding places. She was seven years old. Krystyna, the last surviving member of the hidden group, shares one of the most intimate, harrowing, and triumphant tales of survival.
The Girl in the Green Sweater is also the story of Leopold Socha - the Polish Catholic and the group's unlikely savior.
Come hear her compelling story. We welcome all ages.
